LOS ANGELES—Warner Bros. Pictures announced Wednesday that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story,” Nolan said.
In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”
Wow, the villains have finally been announced and I will admit I was wrong. Catwoman was always a possibility in my mind, but I never thought Bane would be a character tackled by Nolan. I guess the character’s portrayal in the comics seemed too outlandish for Nolan’s version of Gotham. What I failed to remember is that Nolan has never shown the tendency to pull directly from the comic book page. His version of Bane will likely be nothing like the one we remember/try to forget (cough Batman and Robin cough). If I had to guess, we’ll see a bulked up Hardy for this film. Similar to the transformation he made to play Charles Bronson in 2008.
The same original vision is likely to be applied to Catwoman. As we’ve just found out, Anne Hathaway has been chosen for the role. She’s not the typical seductive actress we’ve seen play this role in the past. She’s more of a girl next door that looks good on some days and not great on others. The type of actress we’d expect to play Dr. Harleen Quinzel. But this is typical Nolan. He knows what he wants and he makes it work, despite griping from fanboys.
It’s not what we expected, but Nolan has earned my trust. I look forward to seeing the first teaser photos/posters and a glimpse into the new film. As always, you can count on us to give you those updates.
