Dark HorizonsTalking with The Los Angeles Times, filmmaker Christopher Nolan has confirmed that his third Batman film will be called “The Dark Knight Rises”.

While he won’t reveal the villain of the film, the helmer can confirm that “it won’t be the Riddler.” He also says the studio has agreed that the film should “resist the current 3-D craze” and instead use “high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras”.

In terms of other characters, Nolan says “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.” In other words, nothing unexpected.

Christopher Nolan is not only a great director, but also has a knack for marketing his projects. The Dark Knight viral campaign he launched a few years back had the movie world itching to see Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker. Aside from revealing its dream theme, Inception‘s storyline was kept a mystery until opening night. This time it is no different. He is cleverly wetting our appetites by revealing small tidbits of information at a time.

Nolan also revealed that Tom Hardy’s character will be a villian. We already knew the Inception star had been cast, but we are now assured he will not be helping the Caped Crusader. The biggest story for most fans is that the Riddler will not be a character in the movie. I don’t blame Christopher Nolan for steering clear. The Riddler’s motives would be much too similar to that which we saw in the last movie. I might even call him a poor man’s Joker.

I still believe that the Penguin will be the main adversary in this installment with Catwoman entering as a new love interest. I picture Nolan’s take on the Penguin to be a corrupt politician or businessman known for sporting white and black suits or tuxes at all times. I could be wrong, but I think that is the safest bet. I am certainly not opposed to seeing some lesser known villians hit the screen as well, so long as their motives and actions are realistic (No Poison Ivy please).

Obviously the title is going to take some getting used to. I was expecting a unique title, something new and exciting. Adding one word to the end of your previous installment seems like an easy way out. I was actually expecting the word Gotham to be used. There is still plenty of time for it to change, so don’t be surprised if it does. More information will roll in soon, so stay tuned.
