Telegraph - Spider-Man 4 has been scrapped and the franchise will be “rebooted” with a new actor replacing Tobey Maguire.

The blockbuster sequel was due to start filming next month for release in 2011. But director Sam Raimi was unhappy with the direction of the script and the film has been abandoned, along with stars Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.

Instead, Columbia Pictures announced plans for a replacement movie focusing on the High School years of Spidey’s alter-ego, Peter Parker. It will be released in summer 2012 with an as-yet-unnamed actor in the starring role and a script by James Vanderbilt.

Am I disappointed? No, not really. Spiderman 3 sucked, I wasn’t expecting a whole lotta magic. The only reason the movie piqued my interest was the possibility of Rachel McAdams joining the cast. When I found out that the mildly attractive, but not movie star hot, Anne Hathaway would play Black Cat instead, my spidey sense stopped tingling. The scrapping of this film may have been the best thing for everyone.

As for the reboot, I don’t expect the the same success seen with Batman Begins. Batman’s story is a lot darker and more realistic than Spiderman’s. The absense of a supernatural element is what made Batman Begins and The Dark Knight so successful. Spiderman does not have the same luxury (unless you attribute Green Goblin’s powers to steroids). I am definitely looking forward to checking it out, but I hope they don’t try to ride the coat tails of Christopher Nolan.
