Red Sox Sign Third Baseman Adrian Beltre

5 Jan 2010 – The Red Sox have agreed on a deal with third baseman Adrian Beltre, a source told the Globe. The deal is for one year with Beltre holding an option for the second year.

Peter Gammons is reporting that Beltre would be paid $9 million in 2010. The option would be worth $5 million. In essence, it’s a two-year deal with an opt-out after one year.

Do I like Beltre? He certainly wasn’t on my wish list. Unfortunately getting a deal done for the other Adrian just wasn’t going to happen. Jed Hoyer was Theo Epstein’s protege for the past few years. For Theo, negotiating with Jed must have been like negotiating with himself. It’s hard to trick a guy into taking your B-level prospects, when he values them the same way that you do. I guess Red Sox fans will just have to hope that Beltre, Cameron, and  Scutaro work out better than Smoltz, Penny, and Baldelli.
