The Sicilian Speech from True Romance

This is my favorite Tarantino scene of all time.  To set it up briefly before you watch it…Dennis Hopper’s son (Christian Slater) stole a bunch of coke from a drug dealer (Gary Oldman) connected to Christopher Walken.  Christian Slater stopped off with his new girl (Patricia Arquette) to see his old man before hitting the road, only a few hours before Christopher Walken shows up looking for answers.  Now this Sicilian Don is interrogating an innocent father about his son’s whereabouts.

Tarantino has only shown us Hopper’s character as a sweet, innocent, old security guard thus far in the movie.  Then he lights the Chesterfield and suddenly undergoes a transformation.  Cool, collected, and deliberate, he accepts his impending death, assuming a father’s innate natural duty to protect his son at whatever the cost.  It’s an amazing role reversal, both actors are phenomenal in the scene, and the speech itself is incredible.

Go rent “True Romance” if you haven’t seen it yet.  Here’s the absurd cast: Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Samuel L. Jackson, Bronson Pinchot, Michael Rappaport, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn.
