How not to survive being stuck in a drain

Police have expressed concern after a pair of young girls trapped down a dangerous storm drain used their phones to update their Facebook profiles rather than call for assistance.
The girls, aged 10 and 12, became lost down a storm drain in the Australian city of Adelaide. Just why they were inspecting the city’s protection against flash floods is not made clear.
Realising their predicament, they quickly updated their Facebook profiles to let friends know they were currently stuck down a storm drain, using their fully functional mobile phones.

The first people who read their update, were probably like, “OMG, what a great metaphor for the confining ways of pre-teen life” and pressed “like”. Then, 3 hours later, someone took it seriously and sent help. The girls did end up surviving–but what if they start a trend? I can see it now: while skydiving, Timmy realizes his parachute is broken. He Twitters: “Later bros” as his face is pulverized by pavement. After falling down a well, James posts a live feed of his experience to his Friendfeed page. This is what happens when children are raised with technology!
