Here’s the scene: Bases loaded, 2 outs, and left-hander JD Drew about to face left-hander Andy Pettitte.

Everyone at Fenway was expecting JD to just watch three pitches go by him without taking the bat off his shoulder…that consensus apparently included Jacoby Ellsbury who made a break for the plate completely surprising Posada and Pettitte. “It was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen live…” said one season ticket holder of 37 years. “…except for that donkey show I watched in Brazil.”

The best part about the steal wasn’t the run it put on the board, but the message it sent to the Yankee dugout. After a series filled with disappointment that is not how they wanted to make the Sportscenter Top Ten.

Here’s a fun fact: The last Red Sox player to steal home was Jose Offerman in 1999. Yes, that was before he tried to kill two opposing players with his bat after being hit by a pitch.
